Microneedling Downtime: What to Expect After Treatment
Thinking about microneedling but wondering how your skin will look afterward? One of the questions I hear most is, “Will I need to hide at home?”
Usually, recovery is manageable. You may have some redness, dryness, and sensitivity, so I want you to know what to expect and how to care for your skin once you leave.
How long does microneedling downtime last?
After traditional microneedling, your skin may look flushed or temporarily darker, feel a little swollen, or have a sunburn-like sensation. These reactions often settle within a few days to a week.
Your recovery depends on your skin and how intensively we treat it. I’ll talk you through what to expect from your particular session.
You may feel comfortable going back to work while your skin still looks a little flushed. Feeling ready for everyday activities and looking completely back to normal don’t always happen at the same time.
The day of your treatment
Your skin may feel warm, tight, or sensitive. You might also notice mild swelling or pinpoint bleeding.
Keep your hands away from your face and stick with the aftercare products we discuss. This is the time to keep things simple, rather than try something new.
The next few days
As your skin recovers, you may notice dryness, a slightly rough texture, or light flaking.
Not everyone peels, and you don’t need to peel for the treatment to work. Please don’t pick, scrub, or try to exfoliate away the flakes. Let your skin take its time.
When can you wear makeup?
Plan to wait at least 24 hours before applying makeup. Depending on your treatment and how your skin feels, I may recommend waiting longer.
When you start wearing it again, use clean brushes and applicators. If your skin still feels raw, irritated, or unusually sensitive, reach out to me before putting makeup over it.
What should you use on your skin?
Before you leave, I’ll explain when to wash your face, what to apply, and which products to pause. You’ll also have written instructions to refer to at home.
Once we’ve discussed when to start them, a gentle cleanser and simple moisturizer can help keep your skin comfortable.
Hold off on retinol, exfoliating acids, scrubs, and other potentially irritating products until we’ve discussed when to bring them back. Even something you normally love can sting while your skin is healing.
You don’t need a complicated routine during recovery. Sometimes the best thing you can do is give your skin a little breathing room.
What about workouts, saunas, and time outside?
Plan to take a break from strenuous workouts, heavy sweating, saunas, and hot tubs during early recovery. I’ll give you a timeline based on your treatment.
Limit sun exposure, use shade and a hat, and follow the sunscreen instructions we discuss. If you have outdoor plans coming up, let me know so we can schedule around them.
Let’s plan around your life
Have a wedding, photos, or another important event coming up? Tell me before we schedule so we can allow time for your skin to recover.
At Anderson Wellness & Vitality near Alvord and Decatur, we’ll talk through your goals, decide whether microneedling is a good fit, and make sure you feel comfortable with the aftercare.
